Safe Vaping Starts Here: Batteries, Coils & What to Know

Beth Hines |

Because your vape should deliver flavour — not danger.

Whether you’re new to vaping or you’ve been building coils since the early days of RDAs, one thing every vaper needs to get right is safety. That means understanding how your battery works, how to treat your coils properly, and how to spot trouble before it ruins your day (or your device).

We’ve had customers come into the shop with swollen batteries, burnt coils, and even pods leaking into the charging port — most of it totally avoidable with a little know-how.

So let’s break it down. Here’s everything you need to know to keep your vape setup running smoothly and safely.

🔋 Battery Safety: What Every Vaper Needs to Know

Most vapes run on lithium-ion batteries — the same kind you’ll find in smartphones, laptops, and electric vehicles. They’re powerful, efficient… and need to be treated with respect.

✅ Do:

  • Use the charger that came with your device
Third-party or fast-chargers can damage the battery over time.
  • Charge on a fireproof surface, away from soft furnishings
We recommend a kitchen counter or desk — never your bed or under a pillow.
  • Check for damage
If your battery is dented, swollen, or gets hot fast — stop using it immediately.
  • Store loose batteries in a protective case
Especially 18650s or external batteries. Loose batteries in your pocket + coins = disaster.

“I’ve had people bring in melted chargers from leaving devices under pillows overnight. Always charge safely — it’s not worth the risk.”

❌ Don’t:

  • Leave your vape plugged in overnight
  • Use a damaged USB cable
  • Charge near water or in a bathroom
  • Expose your vape to extreme heat or cold
  • Use external batteries with torn wrappers (get them re-wrapped or replaced)

🔥 Coil Care: The Key to Flavour and Safety

Coils are what heat your e-liquid and create vapour. But they’re also one of the most abused parts of a vape setup — and when they’re not looked after, they can burn out or even short circuit.

Signs your coil needs changing:

  • Burnt or bitter taste
  • Gurgling, spitting, or leaking
  • Less vapour production
  • E-liquid looks darker than normal inside the pod/tank

How to avoid coil burnout:

  • Prime new coils properly – add a few drops of juice directly to the cotton before use
  • Let filled pods/tanks sit for 5–10 minutes before vaping
  • Use the right wattage – check your device’s recommended range
  • Don’t chain vape – give the coil time to wick between puffs

We’ve all been there — rushing a fresh coil because we’re desperate for a puff. But a little patience makes it last twice as long.

⚠️ What to Do if Your Vape Feels Wrong

If your device:

  • Gets hot quickly
  • Tastes burnt, even after changing the coil
  • Isn’t charging properly
  • Is making a fizzing or popping sound when not in use...

Stop using it.
Check the coil, clean the pod or tank, and inspect the battery or charging port. If in doubt, bring it to a trusted vape shop (like us) — we’ll happily take a look.

🧰 Bonus Tip: Keep It Clean

Regular maintenance = safer, longer-lasting vape.

  • Wipe down battery contacts with a tissue or cotton bud
  • Rinse your tank or pod between flavour changes (especially if switching from sweet to icy!)
  • Check for e-liquid buildup around airflow holes, base threads, or pod seals

Sticky juice inside your mod can lead to electrical issues — and it's not fun to clean up later.

Your vape isn’t just a flavour machine — it’s a compact electrical device sitting in your hand, your pocket, or your car. And while accidents are rare, a little care and awareness go a long way.

  • Use the right battery and charger
  • Change your coils regularly
  • Clean your kit often
  • And don’t ignore the warning signs

If you’re ever unsure whether something’s safe — ask. We’d rather help you avoid an issue than fix it after the fact.

Stay safe, stay charged, and keep enjoying your vape the way it’s meant to be. 💨
