Top Tips For Vaping Newbies

If you’ve just purchased your first vape kit, or thinking of investing in an atomiser tank, there are certain rules to follow.

Why are these rules important? You will learn:
  • How to get the best results from your vaping experience
  • How to vape safely
  • How to preserve your vaping equipment
  • When you need to change the coil
  • How to preserve the battery life

Buy Premium E-liquids

This is not a suggestion for you to spend more money. Some e-liquids available online are sub-standard and could even be harmful. Cheap vape juice, usually made in China, is low-quality and contains impurities. Premium e-liquids use medical-grade nicotine and safe ingredients.

Understand PG and VG Ratios

PG (Propylene Glycol) and VG (Vegetable Glycerine) are found in all e-liquids. However, the ratio between the two will impact your vaping experience. If you’re new to vaping, we recommend going 50/50 for your first batch. For more information about PG v VG check out this article.

Prime The Coil

Priming the coil before you use it gives you a pleasurable vaping experience. You should do this when you purchase a new atomiser and every time you replace a new coil.

Classic e-cigarettes are easy to prime. All you have to do is fill up the tank, assemble the device and allow it to stand for around 10-minutes. The standing time allows the e-liquid to saturate the coil and avoids dry-burning the coil which tastes ghastly and damages your coil.

For your first few tugs, use a slow, steady draw. Sharp, hard breaths can flood the clearomiser.

The first time you use a sub-ohm device, follow the same priming technique described above for traditional e-cigarettes.

When you refill the atomisers, you can continue to use this technique or, to speed up the process, drip e-fluid directly on to the coil. Be careful not to oversaturate the coil, however, otherwise you may get bits in your mouth when you inhale.

Replace the Coil Regularly

To optimise your vaping experience, it’s important to replace the coil from time to time. The frequency will depend on much hammer you give the device.

You will know when the coil needs swapping out, when you notice the following signs:

  • The taste of vape juice is not as strong
  • The device is producing less vapour (this could also be due to low battery)
  • The flavour has a harsh or burnt taste
  • The vape tank is leaking. This is because the coil is oversaturated and no longer of any use

E-liquid Maintenance

Shake your e-liquids before using them. This will mix up the PG/VG and nicotine levels and give you a better-balanced vape. Do not store your liquids in direct sunlight. They should be kept in a cool, dry place. And don’t leave the bottle open. For a richer flavour, let the bottle marinate in a dark space for a couple of weeks before use.

Equipment Maintenance

Clean your vape tanks regularly - at least once a week. It’s only a five-minute job. If you don’t, your vape experience will result in foul-tasting flavours and you will damage your equipment.

To clean the tank properly, disassemble the vape, empty the dregs and rinse each of the pieces with hot running water. Leave the pieces on a kitchen towel to dry out.

It’s also worth noting that most starter kits come with a plastic tank. Acidic-flavoured vape juices such as citrus, cinnamon and menthol crack the plastic so invest in a glass or pyrex tank instead.

Sub-Ohm Vaping

If you’re sub-ohm vaping, which most people do, ensure the air-flow holes in the atomiser are unblocked and open. Also use an 80/20 VG e-liquid to maximise the flavour.

Lower the wattage when using a new coil. You always up the wattage after about 20 draws or so to power more electricity and get bigger clouds.

Battery Life and Charging

To promote a healthy battery life, allow the charge to run down before recharging. Don’t leave a device to charge for more than four hours.

Charge your vape through a low-current device such as a laptop or PC rather than directly from the wall. Vape batteries don’t like power surges.

Turn off the battery during a recharge. This helps to prevent damage to the circuitry and ensure the equipment performs better for longer.
